New IRS Tax Compliance Report: Check Your Federal Tax Compliance Status Online

he IRS continues to expand its digital tools to make it easier for taxpayers to access their federal tax information. One of these tools is the Tax Compliance Report, a document that provides a clear and convenient way to check a taxpayer’s compliance status based on IRS records.

The report is available to both individuals and businesses and can be downloaded directly from the corresponding IRS online account.

What Is the Tax Compliance Report?

The Tax Compliance Report allows taxpayers to verify whether they have filed their required tax returns and paid their federal taxes on time.

Unlike a traditional Tax Transcript, the Tax Compliance Report is specifically designed to show a taxpayer’s federal tax compliance status without disclosing unnecessary personal information, such as income, dependents, or filing status.

It can also cover a broader period than a traditional tax transcript, providing a more comprehensive overview of filing and payment history.

The IRS identifies these reports as:

  • Letter 6201: for individuals and sole proprietors.
  • Letter 6574: for businesses.

What Information Can the Report Show?

The Tax Compliance Report may display one of three primary statuses:

Compliant

The taxpayer has met all applicable tax obligations, filed all required tax returns, and paid all taxes on time. The taxpayer does not have an overdue tax return or unpaid federal tax debt.

Noncompliant

The taxpayer has an overdue tax return or unpaid federal tax debt.

Compliance Issue

There may be one or more situations requiring attention. For example:

  • A balance is being paid through an installment agreement.
  • There is a history of filing tax returns or paying taxes late.
  • A civil fraud penalty was assessed, even if it has already been fully paid.
  • A balance due is currently under administrative or judicial review.

It is important to understand that a “Compliance Issue” does not necessarily mean that the taxpayer currently owes money to the IRS.

For example, a history of late tax filings or payments may result in this classification even when the underlying balance has been resolved.

How Can Individuals Obtain the Report?

Individuals can obtain their Tax Compliance Report through their IRS Individual Online Account.

The availability of the Business Tax Account and the level of access available may depend on the type of entity and the role or authorization of the individual attempting to access the business account.

What Can the Tax Compliance Report Be Used For?

According to the IRS, the report can be used when a taxpayer needs to demonstrate federal tax compliance.

For example, it may be requested when applying for:

  • A job
  • A loan
  • A government benefit
  • Another service that requires tax compliance information

One of the main advantages of the Tax Compliance Report is that it provides the information needed to demonstrate compliance without requiring taxpayers to share all the personal and financial details that may appear on a traditional tax transcript.

An Important New Feature: Digital Authentication

In August 2026, the IRS introduced a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report for individual accounts.

The original PDF includes an IRS-issued digital certificate that allows financial institutions, government agencies, and other organizations receiving the report to verify its authenticity.

The certificate helps protect taxpayer information and preserve the integrity of the document.

For this reason, if you need to provide the report to a third party, it is important to share the original PDF downloaded directly from the IRS.

A screenshot, scanned copy, or document created using “Print to PDF” does not retain the digitally authenticated document.

The IRS also notes that some browsers and mobile PDF viewers may not display the authentication message or certificate details. This does not necessarily mean the document is unauthenticated. The original PDF can be saved and opened with Adobe Reader on a desktop computer to view the authentication details.

Currently, digital authentication is available for Tax Compliance Reports obtained through the IRS Individual Online Account.

Are the Tax Compliance Report and Tax Certificate for Award Use the Same?

No.

Within Business Tax Accounts, taxpayers may also have access to the Tax Certificate for Award Use (Letter 6575).

This is a separate document used to determine whether a business has a seriously delinquent tax debt, as defined for certain federal contracting purposes.

Therefore, the Tax Certificate for Award Use (Letter 6575) should not be confused with the Business Tax Compliance Report (Letter 6574).

What Should You Do If the Report Shows a Problem?

If your Tax Compliance Report shows Noncompliant or Compliance Issue, it is important to review the reason before drawing conclusions about your current tax situation.

IRS processing times should also be considered.

According to the IRS, if you recently submitted a payment, it may take approximately two weeks to appear on your account. A recently filed tax return may take approximately four to six weeks to be reflected.

Therefore, a report obtained shortly after filing a return or making a payment may not yet reflect the most recent activity.
